Vadstena

The museum building is from 1260 and was originally a royal palace, later donated by King Magnus Eriksson and Queen Blanka for the foundation of a royal burial church with an adjoining monastery. Magnus Eriksson was the grandson of King Magnus Ladulås and son of Duke Erik Magnusson (see family tree below).

Ödeshög

Founded by French monks of the influential Cistercian order in 1143. Used to be the largest Swedish monestary but dissolved during the reformation. Material from the monestary was used when building Vadstena castle.
